What is TRON energy and bandwidth, and how do they differ?
TRON charges for transactions with two resources instead of one fee. Bandwidth pays for the size of a transaction, energy pays for the work of smart contracts. Most confusion about TRON fees comes from mixing them up.
Here is what each one is, how you get it and how they work together in a USDT transfer.
What is TRON bandwidth
Bandwidth is measured in bytes. Every transaction, whatever it does, has a size and consumes the same number of bandwidth points. A TRX transfer uses about 270 bandwidth, a USDT transfer about 345.
Every activated address gets 600 free bandwidth per day. When that is used up and you have no staked bandwidth, the network burns TRX at 1,000 SUN per byte, about 0.35 TRX for a USDT transfer.
What is TRON energy
Energy measures computation. Only smart contract calls consume it. A plain TRX transfer needs none, while a USDT transfer needs about 65,000, or about 130,000 when the recipient has never held USDT.
There is no free daily energy. You get it by staking TRX, by delegation, or by renting it. Without it, the network burns TRX at 100 SUN per unit.
Energy vs bandwidth at a glance
| Bandwidth | Energy | |
|---|---|---|
| Pays for | Transaction size (bytes) | Smart contract computation |
| Used by | Every transaction | Only contract calls (USDT, DEX, dApps) |
| Free allowance | 600 per day | None |
| Burn price without resource | 1,000 SUN per byte | 100 SUN per unit |
| Typical USDT transfer | about 345 | about 65,000 |
How they work together in a USDT transfer
When you send USDT, the network first charges bandwidth for the transaction size, then energy for running the token contract. If you have enough of both, the transfer costs nothing extra. If energy is missing, TRX is burned for it; if bandwidth is missing too, a little more TRX is burned.
That is why the cheapest transfer has rented or staked energy and either free bandwidth left or a small TRX balance for bandwidth.
How both resources refill
Free bandwidth and staked resources refill gradually over 24 hours. Energy you rent stays on your address for the paid period and also refills during that time, which makes multi-day rentals useful for daily senders.
Checking your energy and bandwidth
TronLink shows both resources on the main screen; Tronscan shows them on your account page. On tron-energy.com you see both right after connecting a wallet, together with how many USDT transfers your current energy covers.
FAQ
Do I need bandwidth if I have energy?
Yes. Every transaction uses bandwidth for its size. Energy covers only the smart contract part.
Can I rent bandwidth too?
Bandwidth can be delegated like energy, but for most users the 600 free daily points plus a small TRX balance are enough.
Which resource matters most for USDT?
Energy. It is the expensive part of a USDT transfer.
