How to reduce the USDT TRC-20 transfer fee
Every USDT transfer on TRON needs energy. Here is where the fee comes from and three ways to pay less.
Why a USDT transfer costs TRX
USDT on TRON is a TRC-20 token, and every transfer calls its smart contract. Smart contract calls consume two resources: energy and bandwidth. If your address has none, the network burns TRX instead.
One transfer needs about 65,000 energy and around 345 bandwidth. Every address gets 600 free bandwidth per day, so energy is what actually costs money.
Option 1. Burn TRX
This is what happens by default. It is simple, but it is the most expensive way: at the current network rate one transfer burns about 6.5 TRX, and twice as much when the recipient has never held USDT.
Option 2. Stake your own TRX
Freezing TRX under Stake 2.0 gives your address energy that recovers every 24 hours. To cover even one transfer a day you need to lock thousands of TRX, so it only makes sense for large balances.
Option 3. Rent energy
Renting gives your address the energy of someone else's stake for a fixed period, from 5 minutes to 30 days. You pay only for the time you need, usually several times less than burning.
On tron-energy.com it takes three steps: connect your wallet, choose the number of transfers and the period, and confirm one TRX payment.
Tips to pay even less
- Sending to an address that already holds USDT needs half the energy of sending to an empty one.
- Rent energy right before the transfer and choose the shortest period that fits.
- Keep a few TRX on the address: a transfer without bandwidth burns about 0.35 TRX.
- Group payments: one rental can cover up to 50 transfers.
