How much TRON energy do I need?

The short answer: about 65,000 energy for one USDT TRC-20 transfer to an address that already holds USDT, and about 130,000 for a transfer to an address that has never held USDT.

The longer answer depends on what you send, how often and to whom. This guide gives you the numbers and a simple way to plan.

Energy per transaction type

TransactionEnergyBandwidth
TRX transfer0about 270
USDT to an address that holds USDTabout 65,000about 345
USDT to a new addressabout 130,000about 345
Other tokens, swaps, dAppsvariesvaries

Why a new address needs double

A USDT balance is stored inside the token contract. When an address receives USDT for the first time, the contract has to create a new storage entry for it, which costs extra computation. That is why the first transfer to an address costs about twice as much energy.

Planning by volume

TransfersEnergy (existing recipients)TRX burned without energy
165,000about 6.5
5325,000about 32.5
10650,000about 65
503,250,000about 325

A simple formula

Energy needed = (transfers to existing USDT holders × 65,000) + (transfers to new addresses × 130,000). Subtract the energy you already have, and that is the amount to rent or stake.

For tokens other than USDT, open a recent transaction of the same type on Tronscan: it shows the exact energy used.

Should you add a margin?

Yes, a small one. The real usage of USDT is slightly below 65,000 for a normal transfer, but dynamic pricing of busy contracts and different recipients can change it. Renting energy in whole-transfer units, as tron-energy.com does, already gives you a safe amount.

Worked example: a week of payouts

Say you pay eight freelancers every Friday. Six already hold USDT, two are new. Energy needed: 6 × 65,000 + 2 × 130,000 = 650,000. Without energy that burns about 65 TRX each week. With rented energy for a 1-hour window you pay only the rental fee, and you can see the exact amount in the calculator before paying.

On tron-energy.com you would set the transfers slider to 10, because each new recipient counts as two transfers.

Daily senders: think in refills

Energy refills over 24 hours. If you send five transfers every day, you need 325,000 energy available each day, not 325,000 per transfer. A multi-day rental of that amount covers all of them, because the energy refills while the rental lasts.
