How does TRON energy work?

TRON energy works like a rechargeable battery for smart contracts. Staked TRX fills the battery, contract calls drain it, and it recharges over 24 hours. When it is empty, the network takes TRX instead.

Below is the full cycle: where energy comes from, how it is spent and how it comes back.

Step 1: energy is generated by staking

When TRX is staked for energy under Stake 2.0, the address receives a share of the network's total energy pool, proportional to its share of all TRX staked for energy. Because the total stake changes, the energy one TRX produces changes too.

Why one TRX gives less energy over time

The network's total daily energy is fixed by governance and shared among everyone who stakes for energy. When more TRX is staked, each TRX receives a smaller slice. That is why the energy per staked TRX keeps changing and why Tronscan shows the current ratio rather than a fixed number. At the time of writing it is on the order of ten energy per staked TRX per day.

Step 2: energy can be delegated

The owner can use the energy directly or delegate it to another address. Rental platforms rely on this: they delegate energy from staked pools to customers for a fee and a set period.

Step 3: energy is spent on contract calls

Each smart contract instruction costs a fixed amount of energy. When you send USDT, the network adds up the energy of all instructions executed. A standard transfer totals about 65,000. The network spends your available energy first, including delegated energy.

Step 4: missing energy is paid in TRX

If available energy is not enough, the rest is paid by burning TRX at 100 SUN per unit, up to the fee limit set for the transaction. If even that is not enough, the transaction fails with OUT_OF_ENERGY.

Step 5: energy refills over 24 hours

Used energy does not come back at once. It recovers gradually over a 24-hour window. That means staked or long-rented energy can be used every day, while a short rental is best used right away.

The dynamic energy model

To keep the network fair, TRON can raise the energy cost of extremely popular contracts during heavy use. This is why energy usage of the same action can differ slightly over time. Renting energy in whole-transfer units leaves room for this.

Energy and bandwidth together

Energy pays for computation, bandwidth pays for transaction size. A USDT transfer needs both. Free bandwidth (600 per day) or a small TRX balance covers the bandwidth part; energy covers the expensive part.

FAQ

Does TRON energy expire?

Staked energy does not expire while TRX is staked. Rented energy lasts for the period you pay for.

How long does energy take to refill?

It recovers gradually over 24 hours after use.

What decides how much energy a transfer uses?

The instructions the smart contract executes. For a standard USDT transfer it is about 65,000.
